Work for Free Scam Busted...Spectacularly

You respond to a job advert, prepare for the meeting/interview, then put hours in developing a proposal only to discover that the company:
A) wants you to develop the project a little more before they "decide", or
B) they won't give you a retainer to start work, or
B) pay you an up-front deposit or
C) want you to work "on spec" until the final product is delivered or service is complete?
If this has ever happened to you then you'll enjoy reading Carrie Cantwell's account of justice served.

Great post & article! This sort of thing seems to be common to many professions. I can't even count how many times I have been bitten by this one, even recently... With me, I am typically asked to meet with a potential client, and hear their material and discuss a recording strategy... During these 'exchanges' there will be all sorts of ideas floating about, and critiquing the material is inevitable - all of which really is comparable to the level of intellectual property offered in a mock-up, etc. They can easily walk away with the knowledge that they need to get to the chorus sooner in Song X, and what would be a great studio to use to get *that* drum sound (simple examples, of course) without hiring me.
I recently edited and produced a series of audio 'coaching' programs for realtors, and a number of top agents in that industry discussed strategies for doing initial consultations with new clients... Apparently it is quite common for people to meet with the top agent in their area, get them to give a price for their home, tips for what needs to be done to prepare it for the marketplace, and then go to another agent with a lower commission rate and list with them, using of course the info gathered from the top agent.
It seems the bottom line is that we need to get the gig by demonstrating what we have done for others, and a successful track record there. What we will do for the potential client will be disclosed when they hire us.

Best,
